Robotics in Education
SRI education researchers are helping the next generation of robotics designers get their start. In addition to sponsoring several high school robotics programs in SRI's local communities for several years, we partner with leading organizations to bring innovative solutions to market and empower future generations of young inventors.
SRI and LEGO MINDSTORMS
(2000)

SRI's Center for Technology in Learning assisted the LEGO MINDSTORMS division in optimizing the programming environment for its Robotics Invention System: a LEGO kit for the creation of robots that features various sensors, an infrared port, and an 8-bit microcontroller. LEGO MINDSTORMS is dedicated to developing and deploying new technologies that empower children to learn. To that end, SRI participated in creating an interactive training center and “Programmopedia” for the Robotics Invention System CD-ROM. The microcontroller featured in the LEGO MINDSTORMS system had roughly the same computing power as the Apple II when it was introduced in 1977, while occupying a fraction of the total volume.
