SRI and its staff members contribute to the community through a variety of sponsorships and volunteer activities. Since 1946, about 25,000 people around the world have worked for the Institute. Wilmot describe SRI's unique, disciplined approach to creating value in Innovation: The Five Disciplines for Creating What Customers Want, published in August 2006 by Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House. In 2005, Don Nielson, who spent nearly 40 years at SRI in a variety of research and management roles, authored A Heritage of Innovation: SRI’s First Half Century. The book concentrates on 50 of the more than 50,000 projects that the institute has completed. Details of SRI's founding years and "take-off days" are reported in a two-volume set of books by Dr. Weldon "Hoot" Gibson, one of SRI's earliest management team members.
