Advanced Research Engineer, Speech Technology and Research Laboratory
Chris Bartels, Ph.D., is an advanced research engineer in SRI International's Speech Technology and Research (STAR) Laboratory. He is currently developing a text-to-speech system for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA's) Broad Operational (BOLT) program, automatic speech recognition for virtual personal assistants, and natural language biometrics for the DARPA Active Authentication project. Past work includes the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA)-funded Submodular Data Selection project.
Before joining SRI, Bartels was a scientist at Yahoo!, working on computational advertising. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington. Prior to his graduate studies, he developed embedded software for GPS and sonar systems at Garmin International.
