George Hughes, Jr., MD, FACP is an expert in “first-time-in-man” and “proof-of-concept” studies of drugs in infectious diseases (antibiotics and septic shock), cardiovascular and critical care (antihypertensives, lipid-lowering agents, antiarrhythmics, blood substitutes, drugs for prevention of coronary restenosis and amelioration of renal failure after cardiac surgery), clinical pharmacology studies, endocrine drugs (sex steroid hormones and selected women’s health products), and opiate antagonists.
Hughes has also worked with adverse event reporting and pharmacovigilance activities. He is an internist and clinical pharmacologist who has helped to bring 12 drugs to market during his 30-year career in academia and the pharmaceutical industry. He has published 50 papers in the fields described above.
Prior to joining SRI, he was the principal for Galahad Consulting, PLC. This medical consulting firm helped clients from “inspiration to innovation,” taking a concept through a full development program to product approval.
He received his B.S. degree from the University of Richmond, VA and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his clinical pharmacology fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina.
