Ian M. Colrain

President, SRI Biosciences

Ian Colrain leads SRI’s Biosciences Division which partners with organizations worldwide to bring new medicines and devices to market through basic research, pharmaceutical and technology discovery, preclinical development and clinical translation.

Colrain is an internationally recognized leader in sleep research and founded SRI’s Human Sleep Research Laboratory in 2001. He has published over 300 articles chapters and abstracts and has an awarded patent for a sleep assistance device.  He is an associate editor for the journal SLEEP and a member of the Medical Advisory Board for Compumedics Pty. Ltd., a leading manufacturer of sleep diagnostic equipment.

Prior to his current role, Colrain held a number of positions at SRI and in academia. He was the clinical senior research fellow in the Stanford University Sleep Disorders Center and held tenured faculty appointments at Auckland University in New Zealand and The University of Melbourne in Australia where he is currently a professorial fellow. At SRI he has been a principal investigator on multiple projects, director of the Center for Health Sciences, executive director of Brain Science and senior vice president of the Biosciences Division. He was named an SRI Fellow in 2013.

Colrain served as a reserve officer in the Australian Army Psychology Corps and earned the Australian Defence Medal. He is a graduate of the University of Tasmania with a B.Sc. degree in computer science and psychology, a B.Sc. honours in psychology and a Ph.D. in psychology with specialization in sleep psychophysiology.
