Research Scientist, Cellular Physiology and Neural Circuitry, Center for Neuroscience
Jaime Heiss focuses on understanding the mechanisms that regulate sleep in mammals at the level of multiple and single neurons by performing in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology as well as functional imaging during sleep and wake. By recording fluctuations in their membrane potential and developing custom analysis algorithms, he investigates how specific neuronal populations respond to a sensory, optogenetic or pharmacologic stimulus.
Prior to joining SRI, Heiss worked at the Weizmann Institute of Science as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Ilan Lampl, where he investigated how the brain process sensory information by recording neurons from the somatosensory cortex.
Heiss received a B.S. in electrical engineering and a M.S. in biomedical engineering from Universidad de Chile, at Santiago, Chile. He obtained his Ph.D. in neurobiology from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel.
