Marcy Berding

Director, Chemistry and Materials

Marcy Berding directs SRI International’s Materials Research Laboratory, which pioneers research and development in the production and purification of materials, high-temperature materials and processes, deposition of thin films and coatings, hydrothermal processes, corrosion measurements and mitigation, and electrochemical materials and processes.

Berding’s work during her career of more than 25 years at SRI has spanned a wide range of materials sciences. She has worked extensively on the electronic and structural properties of semiconductor alloys, combining state-of-the-art ab initio calculations with thermodynamics. She has also studied the application of optical coating theory and metamaterial design concepts to the creation of nanostructures for advanced electromagnetic applications.

Berding’s combined experience in modeling and materials design has led to improvements in many fields, including infrared and gamma-ray detectors. She holds a B.S. degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Cincinnati and an M.S and Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University. She has published more than 50 articles in refereed journals and government reports on a variety of topics. She was named an SRI Fellow in 2000.
