Michael A. Freed
Program Director, Artificial Intelligence Center
Michael Freed, Ph.D., is director of the Human-Centered Computing program in SRI's Artificial Intelligence Center. He joined SRI in 2006 after 12 years at NASA Ames Research Center, where he directed the Human-Centered Autonomy lab and led efforts in human-system modeling (APEX), autonomous aircraft (Army-NASA ARP), spacecraft (MSL — tech transition), and software safety and trust (Design For Safety Program — Human Element).
At SRI, he has primarily led research on intelligent personal assistants in areas such as productivity enhancement (DARPA PAL/RADAR) and adaptive automation (DARPA Bootstrapped Learning). His current work focuses on personal assistants for training (ADL PAL/PERLS) and home health care (DCoach).
Dr. Freed has a Ph.D. from Northwestern University's Institute for the Learning Sciences.
