2019: The year in review

A look at some of SRI’s cutting-edge innovations this year

Can you believe that we’re already at the end of the year, and the decade? As we draw a close to the last ten years, it’s worth noting how technology is impacting our lives in ways today that were previously unimaginable. Indeed, we’ve come a long way from the days when checking email from your phone was considered the epitome of excitement.

Telepresence surgical systems, AI-based synthetic chemistry platforms and cooperative robotics for space, are just a few life-changing solutions created over the years by SRI International. Yes, 2019 was one for the books!

Check out a few of SRI’s most popular projects from 2019:

1. Deep fake detection technology

You can’t trust everything you see. It’s a saying that’s been around for decades, however AI-based technologies are giving a meaning to the phrase. Deepfakes — video content that appears real but isn’t — are a significant threat to society. In their expose on the technology, CNN referenced SRI’s work with DARPA to combat this threat.

2. Advancing quantum innovation with the QED-C

Did you know that your cell phone has more power than the NASA’s Apollo guidance computer? Technology has evolved significantly over the past few decades. SRI is working to keep that momentum going, with the Quantum Economic Development Consortium™ (QED-C).

3. Next-generation 3D welding helmet

Welding is both physically and mentally demanding. To improve the profession, SRI worked with Kawada Industries to create a 3D welding helmet equipped with Xtreme Dynamic Range (XDR) weld technology.

4. A police robot eliminates danger at traffic stops

Police traffic stops are stressful for both the officer, driver and passengers as the situation can become violent without warning. SRI robotics researchers developed a potential solution to this challenge, however, it might be awhile before law enforcement agencies adopt the technology.

5. Preventing communication collapse with CubeSat

Imagine that GPS-based technologies on Earth no longer worked. You would (literally) be lost. Solar activity is a significant threat to satellite signals, which is why NASA and SRI developed CubeSat technology for the Enhanced Tandem Beacon Experiment (E-TBEx).

6. Emotional AI to enhance the driving experience

Cars that connect with the driver at an emotional level used to be the subject of science fiction. It’s now a reality, however, thanks to SRI and Toyota.

Looking to the year ahead

Although it’s great to look back at this year’s accomplishments, the road ahead is even more exciting. Be sure to check out SRI’s vision for 2020!
