Customer-focused services in microcircuit emulation and foundry services

Overview

In addition to leading cutting-edge R&D, SRI also provides a variety of specialized services. Our Generalized Emulation of Microcircuits (GEM) program provides a permanent solution to the problem of microelectronics obsolescence. We also offer foundry services for epitaxial growth and fabrication, and our geovisualization services help clients analyze geospatial data.

Generalized Emulation of Microcircuits (GEM)

Using SRI’s onsite design, test, and foundry capabilities, the Qualified Manufacturers List (QML)-certified GEM program manufactures military-quality replacements for non-procurable microcircuits.

Use of GEM devices prevents production shutdown while maintaining system integrity to substantially reduce operation/sustainment costs, and increase semiconductor and microcircuit aftermarket potential. The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) developed GEM technology with SRI more than 25 years ago as a continuing source of form, fit, function, and interface (F3I) replacements.

This method establishes support for production, redesign, and sustainment requirements throughout the life of the system. GEM technology emulates microcircuits from a broad range of technology families to meet the specifications of original devices (physical, electrical, quality, and environmental) without requiring system documentation changes. Once a device has been emulated, a continuing source for the microcircuit is established, and the obsolescence cycle is broken. A full parts search is available on the GEM website.

Epitaxial MOCVD Growth and III-V Wafer Processing Services

SRI provides tailored foundry services for epitaxial growth and fabrication of compound-semiconductor optoelectronic devices. Our dedicated III-V wafer foundry includes expertise and facilities for fabrication of custom devices.

High-quality epi-material is grown within a production-level metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) reactor configured for the InP, GaAs and GaSb material systems. This epitaxial-growth reactor has large wafer capacity (6 x 2-in. diameter, 3 x 3-in. diameter, 1 x 4-in. or 1 x 6-in. diameter), excellent uniformity, advanced in situ monitoring for improved reproducibility, and materials flexibility due to multiple sources and double dilution networks.

Additionally, SRI operates an MOCVD epi-growth reactor dedicated to the IV-VI material system. The system currently contains Pb, Te, and Sn sources, along with Bi and Sb dopants. Compared to other fabrication methods, MOCVD provides high-quality, single-crystal IV-VI films, junctions, and heterostructures. Custom IV-VI designs can be grown in this system for IR-based detectors and lasers.

Capabilities

Our expert crystal growers have produced a large number of advanced III-V structures including:

  • Low dark-current p-i-n detectors
  • High power laser emitters
  • Distributed feedback (DFB) lasers operating from 750 nm to 2100 nm
  • Quantum cascade devices
  • Low-threshold vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs)
  • Thermophotovoltaic cells
  • We have also grown unique structures on silicon and other non III-V substrates.
  • In addition, the SRI facility maintains characterization tools to ensure high-quality epi-material including:
  • Field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
  • High-resolution x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis to determine lattice constant and layer composition
  • Mapping photoluminescence to measure bandgap and material quality/uniformity
  • Hall measurements to establish doping densities and carrier mobilities
  • Electrochemical Capacitance-Voltage (ECV) profiling to measure carrier concentration versus depth

Geovisualization Services: Precision 3D Virtual Environments and Mapping Solutions

SRI's offers geovisualization services to clients for analyzing geospatial data through interactive visualization. Precision 3D models are integrated with geographic information system (GIS) data to deliver highly accurate virtual terrain databases.

Resulting content can be used for immersive training, visual simulations, facility security systems, emergency planning, and other visualization needs. SRI works closely with clients to enable a deeper, more intuitive knowledge of geospatial data for better decision making.

Users can navigate the developed scenes on many commercial platforms and military systems, including CCTT, CTDB, FATS, JCATS, OneSAF, SOFViz, VCOT, and VRSG. Available delivery formats include:

  • Correlated virtual terrain, enabling live-virtual-constructive (LVC) interoperability
  • Globes, such as Google Earth™ mapping service or NASA World Wind
  • 3D models, including Autodesk® Maya or 3ds Max and OpenFlight
  • Open formats such as COLLADA, VRML/X3D, and WebGL
  • High-resolution 2D maps and digital renderings

SRI has extensive experience correlating and normalizing disparate source data, managing the resulting products, and displaying them in a scientifically useful manner. Using an array of industry standard tools in combination with our unique domain knowledge, we deliver custom products with fast turnaround.

Our geovisualization team also conducts research on advanced topics such as plate tectonics, geographic coordinate systems, data accuracy, terrain ontologies, and photogrammetry.
