Cornerstone Digital Mathematics

SRI is replacing traditional middle school mathematics units with a set of “peak experiences” that provide a more engaging and meaningful way to interact with the subject.

Cornerstone Mathematics replaces a small number of units with a set of “peak experiences” that provide a more engaging and meaningful way to interact with mathematics. The project began in summer 2011 with a grant from the Li Ka Shing Foundation. In 2013 and 2014, SRI will recruit 100 schools throughout England to participate in the project, develop additional modules to increase the breadth of student mathematics learning, and develop a technology platform to sustainably support large numbers of schools.

Cornerstone uses technology-enabled learning activities to present key mathematical ideas. SRI's approach builds on the understanding that pupils learn in different ways and that technology can expand the ways in which students learn difficult mathematical ideas. Cornerstone Mathematics presents ideas by using different representations: narrative, algebraic expression, graphs, tables, and motion phenomena. Concepts such as linear function and geometric similarity that were previously difficult for pupils to grasp become accessible and understandable.

The SRI team is also continuing to develop the materials to address the Common Core standards in the United States.
