Evaluation of Long Beach Skills for Success Program

SRI is the evaluation partner for a program that is advancing knowledge in developing non-cognitive skills in middle schools to increase student success.

U.S. Department of Education Skills for Success grants support projects that implement, evaluate, and refine approaches for developing the non-cognitive skills of middle-grade students (e.g., self-regulation, collaboration, growth mindset) to increase their success. The Long Beach Scholars program embeds non-cognitive skills within STEM-focused college and career exploration classes to address academic standards and contribute to a cohesive 21st century graduate profile.

Through the grant, the Long Beach Unified School District is partnering with Jobs for the Future and SRI to shape the dialogue on the theory and practices of non-cognitive skills development. The project will provide an array of readily accessible products (e.g., lessons, professional development modules, implementation manuals, measurement tools) that are adaptable for other settings.

SRI’s evaluation will estimate the effect of the program on student achievement and non-cognitive outcomes using a matched comparison design. Evaluation goals also include ongoing program assessment to support implementation fidelity and to guide strategies for replication work in other settings.
