Evaluation of Statewide Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) Initiative for CalMHSA

SRI Education examined initiatives intended to prevent mental health problems and reduce adverse outcomes for people with mental illness.

SRI Education supported RAND Corporation with the evaluation of California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA) statewide Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) initiatives focused on reducing mental health-related stigma and discrimination, preventing suicide, and improving student mental health in the state of California.

These statewide initiatives focused on preventing mental health problems and reducing adverse outcomes for people with mental illness. SRI worked with RAND and PEI program partners to

  1. Evaluate programs’ progress toward meeting statewide goals and objectives
  2. Evaluate the outcomes of each of the PEI initiatives
  3. Evaluate the combined impacts of the PEI initiatives statewide

The evaluation team used data collected by individual programs with technical assistance from SRI and RAND, data collected independently by the evaluation team through means including a statewide survey, and data from existing population-based surveys and vital statistics.

In addition, the evaluation team provided technical assistance to PEI program partners to support their ability to collect process and outcome data and to use these data in their own continuous quality improvement efforts.
