National Technology Roadmap Integration for Saudi Arabia
SRI developed a national strategy for Saudi Arabia's long-term science and technology plan.
Saudi Arabia’s national science and technology (S&T) agency, the King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology (KACST), sought SRI’s technical assistance to develop technology roadmaps and integrate them into a unified vision. The result is the first comprehensive national strategy across key technologies to leverage and strengthen the kingdom’s existing S&T resources within industry, university, and government.
For Saudi Arabia’s long-term S&T plan, from 2001-2020 KACST has been leading development of national roadmaps for 12 technology areas:
- Petrol and gas
- Advanced materials
- Electronics, communications, and photonics
- Biotechnology and genetic engineering
- Information technology
- Aerospace and aviation
- Math and physics
KACST sought to infuse the roadmaps with analyses of other international research institutes, and to include benchmarks of Saudi Arabia’s position in each strategic technology.
SRI was selected to perform the work for its extensive S&T policy experience, including experience in technology road mapping and the use of analytical tools to benchmark institutional, regional, and national R&D capacity and competitiveness. This knowledge, in addition to SRI’s extensive experience working in the Kingdom and region, aided SRI’s partnership with KACST.
Collaborating with KACST, SRI developed roadmaps in (1) information technology, (2) math and physics, and (3) advanced materials. SRI performed additional quantitative and qualitative analyses for the nine other technology roadmaps. These included a benchmark comparison with other leading global research institutes and an analysis of scientific publication and patent trends in each technical area. SRI then pulled together all 12 technology roadmaps into a common framework to facilitate communication with stakeholders and to move toward implementation.
