Wide-Field Imager for Solar Probe (WISPR)
WISPR is the only imaging instrument aboard NASA’s Parker Solar Probe.
NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, launched on August 12, 2018, contains four instrument suites to characterize the dynamic region close to the sun. One of those instruments, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory's Wide-Field Imager for Solar Probe (WISPR), is the only imaging instrument aboard the spacecraft and contains two telescopes incorporating SRI’s Active Pixel CMOS detectors. The CMOS imagers are 2k x 2k radiation-hardened sensors, designed and integrated into Focal Plane Arrays (FPA) by SRI. These space-qualified CMOS sensors will capture images of the sun’s atmosphere (or corona), including coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and help derive the 3D structure of the solar corona.
