SRI Is Proud to host an historic event

The PARC Forum
IEEE Milestone Celebration

SRI is proud to host our next PARC Forum IEEE Milestone celebration to be held at our PARC campus on Friday, May 17, to celebrate the creation of three world-changing technologies: the Alto personal computer, Ethernet, and the Laser Printer invented and developed at PARC.

The Forum, to be hosted by SRI’s Chief Executive Officer David Parekh, will include conversations with Vint Cerf and Bob Metcalfe — two people whose contributions have fundamentally shaped modern networking and computing. We will be joined by Tom Coughlin, IEEE President, and Brian Berg, IEEE History Committee Vice Chair. Guests are invited to witness the unveiling of the IEEE Milestone plaques and join us for a celebratory reception.

Our speakers

Bob Metcalfe, Ethernet inventor & Turing Award winner

Bob Metcalfe, a 2022 ACM A.M. Turing Award recipient, is best known for the invention, standardization, and commercialization of the Ethernet. It then became the world’s first open, multi-vendor local area network standard. The idea of sharing proprietary computer technology for a common standard to benefit everyone was a radical idea at that time.

Vint Cerf, co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols & architecture of the Internet

Currently Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist at Google, Vint Cerf is often referred to as one of the “fathers of the Internet” for his role in designing TCP/IP and the architecture of the Internet. He is the former chairman of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

Event hosted by SRI’s David Parekh

David Parekh, Ph.D., is the chief executive officer of SRI, a leading nonprofit research and development organization serving government and industry. Parekh has more than 30 years of experience leading research for industrial and academic research organizations. An independent nonprofit R&D institute founded in 1946, SRI acquired the Palo Alto Research Center in 2023 through a donation from Xerox, and it has been almost 40 years since we acquired Sarnoff Corp. (formerly RCA Labs). SRI is the proud custodian of nine IEEE Milestones: Inception of the ARPANET, Shakey the Robot, the Mother of all Demos, Color TV, Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs), and the TIROS I Weather Satellite, and now Ethernet, the Laser Printer, and the Alto personal computer.
