Amorphous silicon transistors and photodiodes

Street, R. A. Amorphous silicon transistors and photodiodes. Chapter in Solar Cells And Their Applications, second edition, edited by Lewis Fraas and Larry Partain. Hoboken, NJ: Wiley; 2010; 511-532.

This chapter describes the properties of amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin film transistors and p-i-n diodes. These devices are the basis for the different applications of a-Si in solar cells, x-ray detectors and liquid crystal displays. The structure and the electronic properties of a-Si are described along with the characteristics of the various devices used in the technology. The review emphasizes how the particular properties of a-Si determine the device design and performance.
