Abstract

This chapter describes the properties of amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin film transistors and p-i-n diodes. These devices are the basis for the different applications of a-Si in solar cells, x-ray detectors and liquid crystal displays. The structure and the electronic properties of a-Si are described along with the characteristics of the various devices used in the technology. The review emphasizes how the particular properties of a-Si determine the device design and performance.
