Abstract

The Barr Foundation launched the Engage New England Initiative in 2017 to support the development of innovative schools to serve students who are off track to graduate from high school. A primary focus of the initiative has been the improvement of instructional systems to ensure that students receive a rigorous and relevant educational experience. This brief describes common facilitators and challenges experienced by grantees as they worked to further their instructional systems. It also provides some promising practices that grantees used to support these efforts or to address challenges.
