Peter Burt is executive director emeritus of the Center for Vision Technologies in Information and Computing Sciences at SRI International. He has held a number of positions during his tenure, including technical manager, technical director, and director of research and development.
Burt is a recognized leader in the field of computer vision. His pioneering contributions to the discipline of multi-resolution pyramid and wavelet image processing have helped SRI become one of the foremost such groups in the world today. His work has been instrumental in providing core vision functions that enable compact, high-performance systems for use in a broad range of commercial and defense applications, such as vehicle navigation or surveillance in rapidly changing environments.
Burt is the author of more than 60 technical papers and has been the featured speaker at numerous technical conferences. He is the recipient of the David Sarnoff Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement, as well as the Sarnoff President’s Award for exceptional leadership in the research, development, and application of real-time computer vision technologies.
Prior to joining SRI, Burt was a member of the electrical engineering faculty at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
