Young Youth Explore Geospatial Data for Citizenship Project: A case study
Whether in formal or informal science youths’ engagement with data, particularly raw data, is threatened when supports are insufficient for drawing meaning from the data. For example, there may be insufficient explanation of how the data are structured and how to make sense of the statistics that are displayed as forms of data reduction (e.g.,…

Biological Barriers and Current Strategies for Modifying Nanoparticle Bioavailability
This paper reviews the anatomy of the primary organs (kidney, liver, and spleen) responsible for nanoparticle bioelimination and the components of the innate immune system (complement system and scavenger receptors) that indirectly and directly recognize nanoparticles as foreign.

Comparative Molecular Field Analysis of Fenoterol Derivatives Interacting with an Agonist-Stabilized Form of the β(2)-Adrenergic Receptor
The β2-adrenergic receptor (β2-AR) agonist [3H]-(R,R′)-methoxyfenoterol was employed as the marker ligand in displacement studies measuring the binding affinities (Ki values) of the stereoisomers of a series of 4′-methoxyfenoterol analogs in which the length of the alkyl substituent at α′ position was varied from 0 to 3 carbon atoms.

Large-Scale Analogical Reasoning
In this paper, relying on a well-curated biology KB, we present a specific implementation of comparison questions inspired by a general model of analogical reasoning.

Design of a Serum Stability Tag for Bioactive Peptides
Here we explored a possibility of designing a serum stability tag made of natural amino acids. We observed that a diproline motif (-Pro-Pro-) shows remarkable stability against serum endopeptidases.

F Region Dusk Ion Temperature Spikes at the Equatorward Edge of the High-Latitude Convection Pattern
Using Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar data from the International Polar Year, we observed unexpected short-lived enhancements of a few 100 K in the F region ion temperature, or “Ti spikes”, in conjunction with sharp F region plasma density drops near the dusk plasmapause.

Research Brief: Early Implementation of the Massachusetts Educator Evaluation Framework
SRI International and its research partners Abt Associates, Nancy Brigham Associates, and J. Koppich and Associates are evaluating the implementation of the new Massachusetts Educator Evaluation Framework.

Synthesis for Polynomial Lasso Programs
We present a method for the synthesis of polynomial lasso programs. These programs consist of a program stem, a set of transitions, and an exit condition, all in the form of algebraic assertions (conjunctions of polynomial equalities).

Rat Strain Differences in Brain Structure and Neurochemistry in Response to Binge Alcohol
Here, alcohol-preferring (P) and alcohol-nonpreferring (NP) rats systematically bred from heterogeneous stock Wistar rats for differential alcohol drinking behavior were compared with Wistar rats to determine whether genetic divergence and consequent morphological and neurochemical variation affect the brain’s response to binge EtOH treatment.

Biomarkers in Pharmacology and Drug Discovery
The relative utility of single biomarkers compared to biomarker panels is discussed, along with paradigms for biomarker development, the latter in the context of three large-scale biomarker consortia, the Critical Path Predictive Safety Testing Consortium (PSTC), the NCI Early Detection Research Network (EDRN) and the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI).

Gene-Environment Interaction Models to Unmask Susceptibility Mechanisms in Parkinson’s Disease
Here we describe the use of a neurotoxin, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), which produces a nigrostriatal lesion to elucidate the distinct contributions of LOX isozymes to neurodegeneration related to PD.

The MetaCyc database of pathways and enzymes and the BioCyc collection of Pathway/Genome Databases
The MetaCyc database (MetaCyc.org) is a comprehensive and freely accessible database describing metabolic pathways and enzymes from all domains of life.
