Challenges in Scalable Fault Tolerance
Efficient and effective means are needed that exploit structure inherent in one layer of architecture to provide key properties to enable reliable execution at other levels.

A Systems Biology Network Model for Genetic Association Studies of Nicotine Addiction and Treatment
We discuss several applications of our ontology: to support interdisciplinary research by graphically representing a complex scientific theory, to facilitate meta-analysis across different studies, to highlight potential interactions, and to support statistical analysis and causal modeling. We demonstrate that our ontology can focus hypothesis testing on areas supported by current theory.

Working and Episodic Memory in HIV Infection, Alcoholism, and Their Comorbidity: Baseline and 1-Year Follow-Up Examinations
Selective memory deficits occur in individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and those with chronic alcoholism, but the potential compounded effect of these conditions is seldom considered, despite the high prevalence of alcohol use disorders in HIV infection.

Application of Subsecond Spiral Chemical Shift Imaging to Real-Time Multislice Metabolic Imaging of the Rat in Vivo After Injection of Hyperpolarized 13C1-Pyruvate
We report on the development of an ultrafast, multislice, spiral chemical shift imaging sequence, with subsecond acquisition time, achieved on a clinical MR scanner.

Dopamine and Opioid Gene Variants Are Associated with Increased Smoking Reward and Reinforcement Owing to Negative Mood
We explored associations of gene variants in the dopamine, opioid, and serotonin pathways with smoking reward (‘liking’) and reinforcement (latency to first puff and total puffs) as a function of negative mood and expected versus actual nicotine content of the cigarette.

Mesomechanical Modeling of Fracture
Advanced finite element techniques in simulation of the materials behavior under mechanical loading are reviewed.

Recommended Resources For The National Defense Education Program Pre-Engineering Partnerships
This SRI International (SRI) report presents the selection criteria applied in selecting five resources for recommendation to PEP. Accompanying narrative scenarios illustrate how the resources can support S&Es who work in middle school classrooms.

Glucose concentration monitoring based on a small fabryperot etalon
With this approach, we were able to determine aqueous glucose concentrations between 0 mg/dl and 700 mg/dl within the precision of our reference measurement ( 2.5 mg/dl or 2% of the measurement value).

Continuously estimating persistent and intermittent failure probabilities
This paper presents an overall framework for estimating component failure probabilities which includes both persistent and intermittent faults. These estimates are constantly updated while the equipment is running.

Louver screens as multi-functional information displays
Louver-type displays are a novel application for a variety of display technologies.

Human group formation in online guilds and offline gangs driven by a common team dynamic
We have compiled and analyzed data for these two seemingly unrelated ofine and online human activities and have uncovered an unexpected quantitative link between them.

Fabrication of silicon nanowire composites and super-hydrophobic surfaces
We have employed a bottom-up approach to fabricating super-hydrophobic surfaces using Si nanowires (SiNWs) embedded in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).
