The SRI Climate and Education Initiative seeks to identify how climate impacts education systems and children’s learning and development, as well as how states and districts can prepare and respond to disruptions.
Summary
Launched in 2023, the SRI Climate and Education Initiative is an ongoing research and technical assistance program focused on identifying how climate impacts education systems and what states and districts can do to mitigate and respond to those impacts. As extreme weather increases in frequency and severity, so does the risk of disruption to educational services. To minimize the impact of these changes on children’s learning and well-being, education leaders need both insights and tools to understand, prepare for, and respond to extreme weather and other climate-related changes in their systems. The SRI Climate and Education Initiative seeks to support these needs through impact analysis, data visualization, spatial analytics, and technical assistance to states and districts.
Full description of project work
Beginning in 2023 with a study focused on the impacts of extreme weather events on Head Start programs and services, the SRI Climate and Education Initiative has since expanded to exploring urgent climate-related needs across the education spectrum. Through this initiative, SRI works in partnership with federal agencies, states, districts, and early childhood programs to generate action-oriented insights that inform disaster planning, mitigate negative impacts on children’s learning, and inform responsive education policy and practice.
In both research and technical assistance, the SRI Climate and Education Initiative seeks to work in partnership with education agencies to generate actionable insights and build capacity for data-informed responses to evolving climate needs. We welcome partnerships with state or local education agencies, foundations, and other researchers who share the goal of ensuring high-quality educational experiences for children regardless of their exposure to extreme weather, natural disasters, or other climate-related disruptions. Please contact education@sri.com for more information and to discuss potential partnerships, technical assistance opportunities, and other ways the SRI Education and Climate Initiative can support education systems.
