Confidencial, an SRI spinout, is breaking new ground in helping industry and government clients secure highly sensitive data.


Today’s cybersecurity teams face a difficult tradeoff: Security and access are often at odds. The tighter the security protocols, the more cumbersome and inefficient things can become for employees trying to accomplish their day-to-day work.

Solutions that balance security and ease-of-use are paramount. This dynamic goes a long way toward explaining why Confidencial — a startup spun out from SRI — recently won the annual Encryption Innovation Award from CyberSecurity Breakthrough.

Leveraging state-of-the-art cybersecurity capabilities that SRI developed working on two Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) programs, Confidencial’s selective encryption technology protects sensitive content in documents without locking down the entire file. The technology is designed to integrate seamlessly across enterprise systems, including AI systems that need to be insulated from an organization’s most sensitive data.

“Our patented selective encryption is like using a scalpel instead of a hammer for data protection,” said Confidencial CEO Stewart Walchli in the press release announcing the award.
