On the Paint and Coatings Industry Coat It! podcast, SRI’s Julie Bert (director of the Hardware Research and Technology Lab) explained that SRI’s Self-Cooling Paint takes a very direct route: reflecting solar energy back into space.
Any white paint reflects some degree of light away from our planet. SRI’s novel paint goes a step further, not only reflecting visible light but actively radiating heat away from the surface, passively cooling the surface (or building) on which it is applied. As such, the paint is poised to transform how corporations, cities, and consumers manage thermal regulation without energy consumption.
