SRI CEO David Parekh among top global leaders contributing expertise on how technology will impact the future.

For the last 14 years, the World Economic Forum’s Top 10 Emerging Technologies report has highlighted breakthrough technologies poised to shape the future.

As a member of the WEF’s Top 10 Emerging Technologies Steering Committee, SRI’s CEO David Parekh co-authored the 2025 report’s analysis of two of these critical innovations: structural battery composites and collaborative sensing.

By fusing energy storage and structural support, the report notes, structural battery composites could have a massive impact in areas like EVs and aerospace: “EVs already use batteries as part of the vehicle’s structure, but SBCs will take that to the next level by enabling body panels of all shapes and sizes to perform both functions.” In addition to delivering energy efficiency and fuel economy, the report adds, structural battery composites may cut manufacturing costs and accelerate material re-use and recycling.

Collaborative sensing, meanwhile, refers to an emerging approach to sensor data. By fusing data from multiple sensors, processing that data with AI, and enabling autonomous decision-making at a network’s edge, collaborative sensing is poised to unlock a host of new capabilities to address challenges like infrastructure costs, traffic congestion, and carbon emissions.

Other technologies highlighted in the 2025 report include green nitrogen fixation, nanozymes, generative watermarking, and engineered living therapeutics.
