Introduction

The amperometric gas sensor, or AGS, belongs to a large and important class of electrochemical gas sensors, and they play an ever-increasing role in environmental monitoring, medical and health applications, industrial safety, security, surveillance, and the automotive industry. The fundamental principles and constituents of the AGS sensor device as well as some important events in the design and development of the AGS technology are reviewed herein. The modern AGS is based on a series of scientific discoveries, and it is has contributed much to society in its’ rich history.
