Abstract

This study examined the acquisition of deixis in French children from the age of 18-32 months. Emphasis was put on the use of demonstrative pronouns, tense and aspect and the order of acquisition in respect to semiotic categories. Analysis showed that children acquired demonstrative usage before use of the first person pronoun, a result which was linked to Vygotskyan predictions on learning as progressing from the external world towards self-regulation.
