SRI-spinout Wingsure helps coffee farms build consistent intelligence

The new smartphone platform gives growers a single, verified record across various programs.

A buyer wants to know where the beans were grown. A sustainability assessor walks the rows. A lender and an insurer arrive with questions of their own. Each collecting information and moving on. An SRI spin-out, Wingsure introduced a platform called COFFEA that captures evidence on the farm, verifies it, and packages it into what the company calls decision-grade intelligence for the coffee industry.

The system runs on a grower’s own smartphone. Augmented-reality prompts guide users through what to photograph and record, and a voice interface works in multiple languages. Computer vision and geospatial analysis turn inputs into a time-stamped record. The app also functions offline, a practical concern in the remote regions where much of the world’s coffee is grown.

    The central idea is reuse.

Rather than being evaluated separately for sustainability, sourcing, financing and risk, a farm builds up a single record over successive seasons that can be shared across programs. Wingsure says the record should become more valuable each year, while giving companies a more reliable, evidence-based picture of the farms they depend on.

The pitch arrives as coffee buyers face mounting pressure to document the origins of their supply, and as insurers and lenders look for cheaper ways to assess the farms. The Colombian Coffee Growers Federation, which represents hundreds of thousands of producers, and Tata AIG General Insurance are among the organizations engaging with Wingsure.

Wingsure launched out of SRI in July 2021, initially focused on an AI-driven mobile insurance app for small farmers. Its products draw on SRI’s research in computer vision, geospatial analytics and augmented reality.
