Using Ontologies in Hierarchical Modeling of Genes and Exposure in Biologic Pathways
This chapter examines the potential for the use of hierarchical modeling techniques within the framework of an ontology that quantifies relationships across genotypes and phenotypes for nicotine dependence.

WikiWalk: Random walks on Wikipedia for semantic relatedness
This paper evaluates methods for building the graph, including link selection strategies, and two methods for representing input texts as distributions over the graph nodes: one based on a dictionary lookup, the other based on Explicit Semantic Analysis.

Back To The Future: A Non-Automated Method Of Constructing Transfer Models
In this paper, instead of applying automated and computationally intensive approaches, we simply start with existing hand-constructed transfer models at various levels of granularity and use them as a lens to examine student learning.

Bottom-Up/Top-Down Image Parsing with Attribute Grammar
We present a simple attribute graph grammar as a generative representation for made-made scenes and studies an effective top-down/bottom-up inference algorithm for parsing images in the process of maximizing a Bayesian posterior probability or equivalently minimizing a description length.

Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning: A Meta-Analysis and Review of Online-Learning Studies
This finding suggests that the positive effects associated with blended learning should not be attributed to the media, per se.

Morphology of Graphene on Sic (000 1-) Surfaces
Graphene is formed on SiC(000-1) surfaces (the so-called C-face of the crystal) by annealing in vacuum, with the resulting films characterized by atomic force microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, scanning Auger microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

Multiple Roles for Nicotine in Parkinson’s Disease
Extensive studies in parkinsonian animals show that nicotine protects against nigrostriatal damage, findings that may explain the well-established decline in Parkinson’s disease incidence with tobacco use.

Nicotine & Tobacco
One feature of the journal was determined early: It would have an introductory section, similar to those of Science and other journals that emphasize dissemination.

Regression Models of Atlas Appearance
This paper introduces an appearance modeling framework based instead on generalized multi-linear regression. The training of regression appearance models is controlled by independent variables. This makes it straightforward to create model instances for specific values of these variables, which is akin to model interpolation.

Activities of Mixed NOP and μ-Opioid Receptor Ligands
Abstract Background and purpose: Compounds that activate both NOP and μ-opioid receptors might be useful as analgesics and drug abuse medications. Studies were carried out to better understand the biological activity of such compounds. Experimental approach: Binding affinities were determined on membranes from cells transfected with NOP and opioid receptors. Functional activity was determined by…

Saturn Atmospheric Science in the Next Decade
In this White Paper, we use the discoveries from three decades of Saturn exploration to assess the important scientific goals in the coming decade. Many are similar to the case for Jupiter science, but several are unique to the Saturn system.
