The Hidden Permutation Model and Location-Based Activity Recognition
Abstract Permutation modeling is challenging because of the combinatorial nature of the problem. However, such modeling isoften required in many real-world applications, including activity recognition where subactivities are often permuted andpartially ordered. This paper introduces a novel Hidden Permutation Model (HPM) that can learn the partial orderingconstraints in permuted state sequences. The HPM is parameterized…

The Mineralogy of Shock-Induced Melt Vein in Martian Meteorite Zagami: Shock Pressure and Ejection Mechanism
This is the first report of Post-stishovite was found in zagami meteorite in the maskelynite outside of shock-induced melt vein. The mineralogy assemblages of melt vein, including stishovite, pyroxene and other high-pressure phases reported by others, indicated the melt-vein crystallization pressure and shock pressure were smaller than 25 GPa.

Using Spectral Characteristics to Interpret Auroral Imaging in the 731.9 Nm O+ Line
Simultaneous observations were made of dynamic aurora during substorm activity on 26 January 2006 with three high spatial and temporal resolution instruments: the ASK (Auroral Structure and Kinetics) instrument, SIF (Spectrographic Imaging Facility) and ESR (EISCAT Svalbard Radar), all located on Svalbard (78° N, 16.2° E).

Deciding Entailment and Contradiction with Stochastic and Edit Distance-based Alignment.
We use typed dependency graphs generated by the Stanford parser (Klein and Manning, 2003; de Marneffe et al., 2006), which contain a node for each word and labeled edges representing the grammatical relations between words.

Genetics of Nicotine Dependence and Pharmacotherapy
Despite significant strides in the understanding of the relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors to nicotine dependence and treatment, emergent challenges necessitate interdisciplinary coordinated effort for effective problem solving

Reflections on Computer-Related Risks
Tracing the history of exposing and elucidating the wide variety of system problems and associated social implications of uses and misuses of computing technology.

Runtime Certification
We outline a suitable framework, in which the basis for certification is changed from compliance with standards to the construction of explicit goals, evidence, and arguments (generally called an “assurance case”).

Supporting the Art of Teaching in a Data-Rich, High Performance Learning Environment
Data-driven decision-making (DDDM) has become part of the school accountability and reform lexicon. The term commonly refers to policies and practices involving the use of student achievement and other data to drive school improvement at the school, district, and state levels.

Trapdoors for Hard Lattices and New Cryptographic Constructions
Our contributions include a new notion of trapdoor function with preimage sampling, simple and efficient “hash-and-sign” digital signature schemes, and identity-based encryption.
