SRI becomes a founding member of the OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation

Telecom towers at sunset

Hosted by the Linux Foundation, the OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation will build an open-source, AI-native software stack for 5G and early 6G Radio Access Networks.

As one of 17 research institutions participating in the Open Centralized Unit Distributed Unit (OCUDU) Ecosystem Foundation, SRI is joining a powerful new effort to lay the foundation for future AI-native communications infrastructure.

Announcing the recent formation of the OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation, the Linux Foundation framed the move as an effort to create “an ecosystem across enterprise, telecom operators, cloud providers, equipment vendors, and research institutions to co-develop and integrate critical components required for 5G and early 6G deployments.”

Participating alongside institutions such as Georgia Tech, Rice University, UC San Diego, and MITRE, SRI brings deep expertise in wireless systems, AI, and national security research to the Foundation. SRI and the other collaborators will provide direct access to the OCUDU platform for advancements in AI/ML-driven RAN optimization, next-generation design, security, energy efficiency, and more.

“Joining this Foundation reflects SRI’s long-standing commitment to advancing open, trusted wireless infrastructure.” — Phillip Porras

This positions SRI at the intersection of government-backed innovation and a global open-source ecosystem, reinforcing the institute’s unique role in advancing trusted wireless infrastructure for both commercial and national security applications.

“Joining this Foundation reflects SRI’s long-standing commitment to advancing open, trusted wireless infrastructure,” said Phillip Porras, a program director and the internet security lead at SRI. “By contributing our expertise in AI, wireless systems, and national security, we are helping accelerate the development of AI-native RAN technologies that are secure, interoperable, and ready for both commercial and mission-critical applications. We look forward to working alongside this world-class ecosystem to shape the future of wireless connectivity.”
