SRI wins autonomous Space Domain Awareness role in U.S.–Korea collaboration
SRI was awarded a subcontract to STEP Lab Ltd. (Republic of Korea) to develop an optical payload for space domain awareness, supporting an R&D program funded by the Defense Agency for Technology and Quality under Korea’s Defense Innovation Company 100 Initiative.
With this collaboration, SRI delivers a complete engineering qualification model payload built around its space-heritage visible-band imaging sensor, integrating sensor electronics, edge compute, onboard autonomy detect-and-cue algorithms, optics, and opto-mechanical structure. STEP Lab will pair SRI’s payload with its micro-vibration isolation system on a 16U microsatellite platform.
“SRI brings decades of experience in advanced sensing, small satellite payloads, and space situational awareness to this effort,” said Steve Perna, president of SRI’s Integrated Systems and Services division. “We look forward to working with STEPLab, which brings strong capabilities in orbital micro-vibration reduction and space mechanism technology, as we pursue the next-gen optical payload work for Space Domain Awareness.”
