STEM and computer science
SRI Education is at the forefront of integrated science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science education from preschool through 12th grade.
We develop and evaluate innovative instructional materials and assessments, design and study professional development initiatives, and research STEM and CS learning in and out of school.
Part of SRI Education’s Center for the Future of Education and Technology (CFET), the STEM&CS team leverages their multidisciplinary expertise to critically examine and inform the development of comprehensive STEM and CS programs and systems across the education landscape.
This collaborative effort brings together diverse insights to ensure a well-rounded perspective on pedagogy, technology use, performance metrics, assessment strategies, equity considerations, and alignment with educational standards and frameworks in STEM and CS.
About the program
SRI Education’s STEM&CS team engages in a broad range of research activities:
- Domain specific topics, such as math, science, engineering, computer science
- Intersectional domains, such as STEM and computing
- Digital learning domains with STEM and CS components, such as game-based learning, programming for mathematics learning, e-textbooks, machine learning for automated assessment of collaboration, and computational modeling and simulations for science learning
- Broadening participation in STEM and CS for students of all backgrounds, abilities, and experience levels
The STEM&CS team conducts research in a range of settings, including:
- Workforce upskilling and reskilling settings
- Elementary, secondary, and postsecondary education
- Formal and informal learning environments

Our service areas
Offering a comprehensive suite of services, the STEM&CS team in SRI’s Education division is dedicated to supporting researchers, educators, education leaders, and commercial and federal business partners in achieving their objectives for learning and teaching. These services include:
- Design and development: We collaborate with clients to design and develop impactful educational materials, assessments, and programs that help teachers and students enhance teaching and learning experiences.
- Evaluation: Our services encompass both formative evaluation and rigorous summative evaluation to gauge the impact and effectiveness of educational initiatives, providing valuable insights for refinement and improvement.
- Classroom research: We conduct fundamental learning sciences research to generate evidence-based knowledge that informs teaching and learning in STEM and CS disciplines. We systematically investigate teaching and learning processes to gain insights into the effectiveness of instructional methods, curricula, and classroom practices.
- Technical assistance: We provide technical assistance to schools, districts and states to collaboratively address identified needs, such as supporting the rollout and implementation of new STEM and CS programs, designing policies for the use of AI and emerging technologies, and training educators and school leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge for successfully implementing STEM and CS programs.
- Teacher professional development: We conduct workshops to train new and experienced teachers and build teacher capacity in effective STEM and CS instruction, including the ability to develop and use formative assessments to inform instruction.
- Training: We contribute to the continual improvement of educational methodologies and outcome by supporting the upskilling and reskilling of professionals in various educational settings. We help professionals adapt to changes in their current professions and support the growth of existing skills or new skills for career advancement.
- Dissemination: Our dissemination efforts help to foster a culture of knowledge exchange. We continuously share and communicate successsful strategies and findings, methodologies, and implications of our research to a broader audience, contributing to knowledge-sharing within the academic and practitioner communities.
Together, these services form a holistic approach to advancing learning and teaching in diverse educational settings.
By engaging with our services, interest-holders benefit from tailored solutions to enhance educational programs, ensuring they align with the latest research and pedagogical advancements. We provide robust support across the entire education landscape, fostering collaboration and innovation to elevate the quality and effectiveness of learning experiences.
