Synthesis of Doxycycline-[(CD3)-C-13]
In this process, doxcycline was oxidized to the N-oxide using m-CPBA. The hydrochloride salt of the tertiary N-oxide was treated with Fe(0)/FeCl3 catalyst yielding the N-demethylated product.

Recruiting Participants for Large-Scale Random Assignment Experiments in School Settings
We report here on our experiences in recruiting participants for random assignment experiments in public primary and secondary schools. Our perspective is based on over twenty current and completed randomized controlled trials (RCT) in K–12 school settings conducted by SRI International.

White Matter Microstructural Recovery with Abstinence and Decline with Relapse in Alcohol Dependence Interacts with Normal Ageing: A Controlled Longitudinal DTI Study
Background Alcohol dependence exacts a toll on brain white matter microstructure, which has the potential of repair with prolonged sobriety. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) enables in-vivo quantification of tissue constituents and localisation of tracts potentially affected in alcohol dependence and its recovery. We did an extended longitudinal study of alcoholism’s trajectory of effect on selective…

Building a Breathprint: Biomarkers of Exposure Due to the Toxicant Trochloroethylene
Our pilot studies indicate that we can detect TCE and other VOCs in the breath environment that are indicative of neuronal degeneration. Pending studies will investigate the relationship between toxicant exposure and VOCs with known markers of nigrostriatal damage in animal models which can be correlated to VOCs from breath samples of human PD patients.

Development of an Agonist of the TGF-Beta Signaling Pathway to Treat Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that leads to progressive cognitive dysfunction. Current knowledge of the processes leading to AD is still limited, and no effective treatments are available. Because neurodegeneration is associated with injury and activation of innate immune responses in the brain, drugs that could mimic the beneficial aspects of this response…

A Top to Bottom Evaluation of IRI 2007 within the Polar Cap
This analysis demonstrates notable differences between IRI and ionosonde NmF2 diurnal and seasonal behavior over the entire period studied, where good agreement is found during summer periods but otherwise errors in excess of 50% were prevalent, particularly during equinox periods.

5′-AMP-Activated Protein Kinase (AMPK) Supports the Growth of Aggressive Experimental Human Breast Cancer Tumors
Here, we used triple-negative human breast cancer cells in which AMPK activity had been knocked down to investigate the contribution of AMPK to experimental tumor growth and core glucose metabolism.
