Identification of a Population of Sleep-Active Cerebral Cortex Neurons
We have identified a population of cells in the cortex that is activated during sleep in three mammalian species. These cortical neurons are a subset of GABAergic interneurons that express neuronal NOS (nNOS).

Nutritional Stress Affects Mosquito Survival and Vector Competence for West Nile Virus
We evaluated the effect of different sucrose meals following a blood meal containing West Nile virus (WNV) on Culex pipiens pipiens survival, nutritional status, and susceptibility to viral infection and transmission.

Energetics of SixOyCz Polymer-Derived Ceramics Prepared Under Varying Conditions
In this work, we support earlier studies that the resistance to crystallization of these nanodomain networks is due to thermodynamic as well as kinetic factors.

Structural Group Analysis for Soot Reduction Tendency of Oxygenated Fuels
In this paper, a structural group contribution approach is proposed to interpret experimental observations on the effect of oxygenated additives on the sooting propensities of hydrocarbon fuels.

Neuroinflammation as a Neurotoxic Mechanism in Alcoholism: Commentaryon “Increased Mcp-1 and Microglia in Various Regions of Human Alcoholic Brain”
Neuropathological studies of chronic alcoholism indicate that loss of neurons is selective to frontal cortex (Courville, 1955, Harper and Kril, 1990) with little evidence for widespread cell loss (Harper, 1998, Harper et al., 1987, Kril and Harper, 1989).

Early Indicators of Exposure to Biological Threat Agents Using Host Gene Profiles in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells
To detect exposures to the various pathogens more rapidly, especially during these early stages, we evaluated a suite of host responses to biological threat agents using global gene expression profiling on complementary DNA arrays.

Reduced Parasympathetic Activity During Sleep in the Symptomatic Phase of Severe Premenstrual Syndrome
We investigated HRV during sleep, a state that is relatively free of external disruptions, in 9 women with severe PMS and 12 controls.

Spatially Correlated Fluctuations and Coherence Dynamics in Photosynthesis
Here we present a generic model in which a strong intermolecular steric restoring force in densely packed pigment-protein complexes results in a spatial correlation in conformational (static) variations of chromophores, which in turn induces an effective coupling between high-frequency (dynamic) fluctuations in donor and acceptor.

Hypocretin/Orexin and Nociceptin/Orphanin Fq Coordinately Regulate Analgesia in a Mouse Model of Stress-Induced Analgesia
Stress-induced analgesia (SIA) is a key component of the defensive behavioral “fight-or-flight” response. Although the neural substrates of SIA are incompletely understood, previous studies have implicated the hypocretin/orexin (Hcrt) and nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) peptidergic systems in the regulation of SIA.

L-Selectin-Deficient SJL and C57Bl/6 Mice Are Not Resistant to Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis
L-selectin has been suggested to play a role in the pathogenesis of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of multiple sclerosis. Here we demonstrate that L-selectin–/– SJL mice are susceptible to proteolipid protein (PLP)-induced EAE because the compromised antigen-specific T cell proliferation in peripheral lymph nodes is fully compensated by the T cell response raised…

Measurement of Debris in the Flow from Pyrotechnic Reactions Using an Instrumented Hopkinson Pressure Bar
When an NASA standard initiator (NSI) combusts within the confinement of a pyrovalve, debris is generated and entrained into flow. This debris can originate from the closure disc, the zirconium potassium percholate (ZPP) reactants, and perhaps material ablated from the valve body such as aluminum.
